Nurtured by Love

If you are interested in beginning violin, if you already play, or if you are a parent or individual looking to be inspired, I would suggest reading the book Nurtured by Love by Shin’ichi Suzuki. It is a wonderful read to learn about the philosophy of the Suzuki Method, more about Suzuki's history and how you can apply it to your daily life.  The Suzuki Method really embraces the family and parent participation is an integral part of Suzuki lessons.

Suzuki's method is based on the idea of the "Mother Tongue" that each child can learn their own language from age zero. He created a philosophy called Talent Education which included beginning early, listening, repetition, learning with other children, parental support in the process and lots of loving encouragement.    Parents attend every lesson and first learn how to play the violin and then actively help their child in home practice with instruction from the teacher . You will come out of the lesson with specifics on how you can help your child.  In addition to weekly lessons, students attend group lessons to experience playing and learning with other students. Parents are part of a community of people to help support one another.  We have fun together too with group pizza night's, parent's hour, and other fun activities to support and grow together!

As you can briefly see, this way of learning an instrument is joyous, nurturing and highly parent involved. With this triangle of parent, student, teacher, we can all grow together to nurture the child.

This is a little "taste" of what a wonderful journey Suzuki violin can be.  Suzuki believed we are not just playing an instrument, we are nurturing the child and ourselves to become better human beings. WOW!
